Today, I’m sharing both Rachel Rappaport’s home for A Peek Inside: indie home tours. Rachel is a food writer and recipe creator extraordinaire and she has shared over 800 of her original recipes in a variety of cuisines on Coconut & Lime…one of my regular reads. Rachel, like me, is a work-from-blogger and her home really seems like it would be a wonderfully cheery environment to work and live in. Her decorating style can be described as fun, colorful, retro and whimsical. You can learn more in my interview her below.
In addition to sharing her home, Rachel is also sharing a yummy recipe for Sesame Gai Lan Salad, which I made using some regular old kale instead of the gai lan and it was delish.
Sesame Gai Lan Salad – by Rachel Rappaport of Coconut & Lime
Ingredients:
3 cups chopped gai lan (Chinese broccoli or kale)
2 cups snow peas
1 carrot, cut into matchsticks
For the dressing:
1 tablespoon shaoxing wine
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon hot chile sesame oil
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Directions:
Bring a large pot of water to boil. Add the vegetables and boil until the gai lan is bright green, about 2 minutes. Drain and then immediately plunge into a bowl of cold water. Drain again. Whisk together dressing ingredients, toss with greens.
1. How would you describe your designing style?
I would say that my style is some what eclectic but I am definitely drawn to bright colors and fun but functional pieces.
2. List a few of your treasures and share if there is story behind them.
I have a vase with paper flowers in them that my husband made. I held them during our (tiny! courthouse!) wedding ceremony and since they are made of paper, I can keep them forever.
I also really enjoy a few recent obtained pieces-one of which I want to repaint-that used to be in our tiny family cabin on Bird River. I have fond memories of them from my childhood and I look forward to incorporating them into my home.
3. I’m assuming you spend a lot of time in the kitchen, what would you most like to change about it or are your satisfied with it in its current state?
I love the color of our kitchen, but it is from the 1930s and doesn’t have much in the way of storage space. I’d love to knock down the wall between the kitchen and dining room and turn it into an island with storage space underneath.
4. What’s been your favorite DIY project so far? And your least favorite?
I think my favorite DIY projects are the wooden boxes I decoupaged years ago. Each drawer has a theme and they really add some color to the room. My least favorite DIY project is any sort of room painting.
5. What’s your favorite room in the house and why?
I find my craft room to be the most attractive, but I think I spend the most time in the kitchen and living room, both of which are finally comfortable and as functional as they can be.
